The General Register Office (GRO) holds a central copy of all registrations for England and Wales. Service Announcement
The level of certificate application receipts significantly increased as a result of the BBC series in November/ December last year. The GRO continues to receive high levels of applications as a result of this continued interest in family history research.
As a result we are despatching the majority of standard orders with a GRO index reference between 8 and 10 working days* after receipt. A full recovery plan is in place and it is expected that the 4 working day service will resume from the beginning of April 2005.
Please note that orders of up to 5 certificates are currently being despatched as single applications. Customers may therefore receive their orders in up to 5 separate envelopes. This is a temporary measure to enable us to increase efficiency and maintain despatch dates as above.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused.
General Register Office – 4th March 2005.

Lets hope they get on top of the applications. I really hope this does not put our "newbie" genealogists off family history!
